Mix it up

Write with your non-dominant hand.

Turn on some music and sing. Loudly. Maybe even badly.

Speak in an accent.

Go for a walk—without the dog, the iPod, or a destination.

Make something with your hands and raw materials.

Arrange for an afternoon of alone time. Lie on the floor with a notepad and pen. Do nothing till you are inspired to write something down.

Volunteer at a soup kitchen.

Go to a local museum.

Get your hands in the dirt. Plant a tree. Pull weeds.

Handwrite a letter to an old friend.

Make out (only).

What do you do to mix it up? Which are the times that take you into that super-present, bigger-picture awareness? What gets you out of a rut?
